Youth slam: The battle to be called the best
By DONALD ALLEN
The Dallas Examiner
Last month, North Texas students were given the opportunity to showcase their craft by embarking on a poetry competition that was the first of its kind in Dallas/Fort Worth. The First North Texas Youth Poetry Slam Championship was held at the South Dallas Cultural Center, on April 15. The young poets participated for a chance to become the DFW National Youth Poetry Slam Team and later compete at the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Los Angeles.
Although the ultimate competition is months away, these youth had to bring their A-game to be ranked best for the night and qualify to make the team. Family and friends gathered to show support of this long-awaited venture.
Michael Guinn, a well-respected poet, was the host for the event. Guinn has a master’s degree in social work. He uses his degree to help him relate to troubled youth and show them how to express their feelings through the art of poetry.
Guinn is the founder of the Fort Worth National Poetry Slam Team, which is one of the top poetry slam teams in the country, winning championships locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
He is also a part of Poetry Slam Inc., a group that sanctions all adult poetry venues. Many members of this organization decided to mentor kids who weren’t of age to participate in the adult events. The mentors’ desire to also offer teens an official outlet for their poetry led to the birth of Youth Poetry Slam.
“I have been doing poetry workshops with younger poets since April of last year,” said Guinn. “The kids were very receptive to the workshops because they had all this desire to express themselves but didn’t know how or where.” Well, now they do.
From afros to ponytails, the color of the community was well represented. The evening’s event was an official preliminary slam to spotlight those ages 13 through 19.
The pioneering young poets included on the 2010 DFW Youth Poetry Slam Team:
Asia York (Lancaster High School-Lancaster), Caitlinn Woodall (Nichols Jr High-Arlington), Ade Giwa-Bello (Washington DC), Jennifer Spots (Nichols Jr High-Arlington), Daniella Willis (Oakridge Academy-Pantego) and Alex Sparks (Dallas Institute). Alternates Ange Aimee Melmer (TCC South) And Ms Valencia King (Rowlet High School),
