The Mission
This Workshop guides students on their journey toward a lifetime of learning and using the writer's craft in all its many applications. This process begins with very basic writing workshop classes and courses in which students read and critique one another's writing. These courses teach students how to nurture their creativity and to employ the skills of the literary arts. This helps give each student a sense of appreciation for the art and fosters a thirst for learning new language arts skills.

The Finding Our Own Voice Poetry Workshop Mission
Finding Our Own Voice prepares students to become serious writers. Robert Frost said that a poem "begins in delight and ends in wisdom."  Writing, therefore, is a unique and individual journey, one that will involve the student's whole college experience and will extend beyond it through the seasons of life and work. To prepare for this journey, Creative Writing students study the great works of yesterday and today, as they strive to hear their own personal music "in the deep heart's core."

Finding Your Own Voice Creative Writing Workshop For Emotional Literacy is now in its 10th year.
Founded and facilitated by Mr. Michael Guinn-MSW. It is the leading creative arts program utilizing poetry and spoken word as a vehicle for teaching self respect-literacy and social awareness.  Michael's format is the catalyst for the latest influx of programs that utilize arts as a way of reaching todays youth.

Youth slam: The battle to be called the best

By DONALD ALLEN
The Dallas Examiner

Last month, North Texas students were given the opportunity to showcase their craft by embarking on a poetry competition that was the first of its kind in Dallas/Fort Worth. The First North Texas Youth Poetry Slam Championship was held at the South Dallas Cultural Center, on April 15. The young poets participated for a chance to become the DFW National Youth Poetry Slam Team and later compete at the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Los Angeles.

Although the ultimate competition is months away, these youth had to bring their A-game to be ranked best for the night and qualify to make the team. Family and friends gathered to show support of this long-awaited venture.

Michael Guinn, a well-respected poet, was the host for the event. Guinn has a master’s degree in social work. He uses his degree to help him relate to troubled youth and show them how to express their feelings through the art of poetry.

Guinn is the founder of the Fort Worth National Poetry Slam Team, which is one of the top poetry slam teams in the country, winning championships locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

He is also a part of Poetry Slam Inc., a group that sanctions all adult poetry venues. Many members of this organization decided to mentor kids who weren’t of age to participate in the adult events. The mentors’ desire to also offer teens an official outlet for their poetry led to the birth of Youth Poetry Slam.

“I have been doing poetry workshops with younger poets since April of last year,” said Guinn. “The kids were very receptive to the workshops because they had all this desire to express themselves but didn’t know how or where.” Well, now they do.

From afros to ponytails, the color of the community was well represented. The evening’s event was an official preliminary slam to spotlight those ages 13 through 19.

The pioneering young poets included on the 2010 DFW Youth Poetry Slam Team:

Asia York (Lancaster High School-Lancaster),  Caitlinn Woodall (Nichols Jr High-Arlington), Ade Giwa-Bello (Washington DC), Jennifer Spots (Nichols Jr High-Arlington),  Daniella Willis (Oakridge Academy-Pantego) and Alex Sparks (Dallas Institute). Alternates Ange Aimee Melmer (TCC South) And Ms Valencia King (Rowlet High School),

TAKS Testing Enhancement
The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) is a
standardized test used in Texas primary and secondary schools to assess students' attainment of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies skills required under Texas education standards[1]. It is developed and scored by Pearson Educational Measurement with close supervision by the Texas Education Agency. Though created before the No Child Left Behind Act was passed, it complies with the law. It replaced the previous test, called the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills or TAAS, in 2003[2].
Those students being home-schooled or attending private schools are not required to take the TAKS test.

We Guarantee 100% improvement with trouble students who struggle on the TAKS test?

"WE REACH THE UNREACHABLE
SO TEACHERS CAN TEACH THE UNTEACHABLE"

Mike Guinn says:
"Its easy to work with elementary and middle school youth whose issues can be more easily addressed because they've not  manifested at a critical level.  But to take 15, 16,, 17, 18, 19yr olds who have a plethora of financial, emotional, educational, social setbacks and get them to listen to connect to rediscover hope.. now that's an accomplishment worth celebrating".

Fort Worth National Poetry Slams has worked 5 metroplex school districts:
